The Lower Platte South NRD Stormwater Management Program is a joint effort with the City of Lincoln or other communities and counties in the LPSNRD. If requested, the LPSNRD will work closely with each community on developing plans to improve stormwater quality, reviewing proposed plans for development, or establishing regulations and permits to meet set standards.
In Lincoln, regulations require specific permits and plans before contractors can begin construction. The LPSNRD plays a vital role in this process. These safeguards help protect adjacent landowners from sediment erosion, flooding, and they help improve water quality in our streams and lakes. Besides requiring contractors to follow specific practices, the LPSNRD, along with the City of Lincoln, also helps contractors stay aware of the latest techniques through workshops and similar events.
The NRD has established the Community Assistance Program to assist communities (towns, villages, neighborhood associations, homeowner associations, etc.) with the planning, design, and construction of LPSNRD eligible projects. Typical projects include stream stability, streambank stabilization, flood control, stormwater quality, and more. We consider project requests on a case-by-case basis with assistance generally limited to 50% of the cost. The community often serves as a sponsor of the project by contracting for engineering, obtaining land rights and permits, and agreeing to operate and maintain the project. If community officials have ideas or problems related to natural resources, please contact us.
Landowners wishing to preserve unique natural resources such as wetlands, forestland, or native prairie, may do so by granting a "conservation easement" to the LPSNRD. The LPSNRD currently holds 19 conservation easements over more than 1,400 acres of private land.
